Desperate times, desperate measures: Wk-batter Sanju Samson turns to bowling for T20 WC selection

Prior to this, Sanju had bowled a grand total of 15 balls in his 13-year old domestic career.

Sanju Samson has shed his gloves and picked up the ball to further his chances for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Having been on the sidelines of the T20I side for the last few years, the talented wicketkeeper batter has decided to take some extreme steps to further his case.

Sanju Samson, who is currently leading Kerala in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024, decided to take the ball against Bengal. Running out of options to give the ball to, the skipper decided to have a bowl himself.

Funnily enough, this was just the second time Sanju Samson was bowling in a first-class match. The 29-year-old cricketer made his first-class debut in 2011 but has bowled just one over prior to today.

Although Samson decided to give himself a go, the move backfired. The part-time bowler gave up 11 runs in the solitary over and didn’t bowl again.

The solitary over had no bearing on the match. Kerala went on to win the match by 109 runs and moved to the fourth spot in the Elite Group B points table to improve their quarterfinal chances.
