Sayali Satghare becomes WPL 2024’s first concussion substitute after Dayalan Hemalatha suffers head injury

Hemalatha, a batter by trade, was replaced by Satghare, who's a bowling all-rounder.

In a horrible turn of events, Gujarat Giants’ batter Dayalan Hemalatha suffered a head injury while fielding. In the 15th over of the first inning in the Gujarat Giants vs Delhi Capitals match, a shot by Jess Jonassen struck Hemalatha on the head after bursting through her fingers. Placed at deep mid-wicket, the right-handed batter used the reverse cup method to grab the ball and give Kathryn Bryce her first wicket.

However, it turned out to be yet another drop, as she failed to collect the ball cleanly, and it hit her right in the temple. Dayalan Hemalatha fell to the ground, and the physio took her to the sidelines. Following the assessment of the Players’ Team Medical Personnel of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the match referee permitted a concussion substitute.

For the remainder of the match, Sayali Satghare, a bowling all-rounder by trade, will take Hemalatha’s place as the Gujarat Giants aim for their first win of the 2024 season.
