About Pat Cummins

Identified as a promising talent from an early age, Pat Cummins made his Test debut at 18 but faced a six-year hiatus due to persistent injuries. However, upon his return in 2017, he transformed into a formidable fast bowler, eventually assuming the role of Australia’s Test captain in late 2021 under dramatic circumstances.

Cummins burst onto the international scene with a stellar Test debut, claiming seven wickets and helping secure a crucial victory against South Africa. Despite injuries interrupting his progress, he had showcased his potential since his debut for New South Wales and impressed in his initial Big Bash appearances, earning a central contract at a remarkably young age.

Subsequent years were plagued by setbacks, including multiple stress fractures in his back, keeping him out of Test cricket until the 2017 India tour. However, Cummins’ perseverance and resilience paid off as he adapted to the demands of top-level cricket.

Following Australia’s ball-tampering scandal, Cummins emerged as a beacon of excellence, particularly notable for his performances during the 2018-19 season, where he rose to become the world’s top-ranked Test bowler. His contributions were instrumental during tough series against India and England, showcasing his unwavering determination and exceptional skill with the ball.

His promotion to the captaincy happened sooner than anticipated after Tim Paine’s resignation just before the 2021–22 Ashes. Still, considering the circumstances, it was nearly a seamless shift, fitting with the kind of player and leader Cummins had become. After a few months, on Australia’s first trip to Pakistan in 24 years, he had won the match and kept the Ashes.
